“thought asbestos had been banned for decades in the us.” 陶郁说，“it is the most on cause of lung cer. whehe twin towers built？” （译：我以为美国几十年前就禁止（在建筑材料中使用）石棉了。它是最常见的导致肺癌的原因。双子塔是什么时候建的？）

“签完回家去看看你父母？”

陶郁没接话，他没告诉家里要回国，每次母子见面气氛都不太好，上次还因为受伤的事不欢而散。至于他爸，反正压根儿也不想见自己。

常征见他不回答，走到卧室门口劝道：“你难得回国，和他们一起吃顿饭也好。”

老头说：“i’ve seen studies showing if you leave in an asbestos taining house but you don’t smoke， or the opposite way， the risk of getting lung cer wouldn’t be a lot higher than normal. but if you smoke and live in an asbestos taining house at the same time， the moster would e to you.”（译：我看过一些研究，如果你抽烟但不住在含有石棉的房子里，或者相反，患癌症的风险并不比正常情况高很多。但如果你既抽烟又住在含有石棉的屋子里，那“怪兽”就会找到你了。）

陶郁笑道：“your house is new. i bet you told carol the story so she allows you to smoke at home.” （译：你家房子

陶郁合上箱盖，把行李提到墙边，犹豫了一下说：“不了，他们也不一定在北京……”

上海方面负责接待的男老师三十多岁，叫陈立，八年前跟老头做过一段时间博士后，算起来是陶郁的师兄。那年发生911，全美恐慌，外国人比现在还难找工作。陈立当时接到国内几所大学的邀请，最后选择来上海。

晚餐时，陈立和老头聊起当年，双子楼倒塌后的第二天，老头带陈立和另外两个学生去了纽约，受邀研究楼塌和大火造成的污染对周围商户住户的影响。
